History


Cornelia Red Apple FestivalApples have been mainstay of the economy at times, but it was a quest for gold that brought Hernando de Soto here way back in 1540. The community was first settled in 1870, and it prospered when the railroad arrived in 1882. The town is famously known as the home of Ty Cobb, who was born here in 1886. Cobb ultimately retired here at the conclusion of his illustrious baseball career. The 1956 Disney film, "The Great Locomotive Chase," was filmed in and near Cornelia. It featured the Tallulah Falls Railway that ran northward along the gorge by the same name.

Parks and Recreation

The Lake Russell Recreation Area offers excellent fishing along with boating, water skiing, sailing, tubing, and hiking. Camping and picnicking are also popular, and bass fishing tournaments are a regular event. Lake Russell is as wide as 1.5-miles in places, and it offers over 500 miles of shoreline. Private development along the lake is prohibited, and as a result, it is one,of the most scenic and pristine lakes in all of the southeastern United States. Lake Russell Park even offers 27 rental cottages.

Cornelia City Park on Wyly Street is often referred to as the "Big City Park." Over 20-acres of land includes an improved pavilion right near the entrance. A new walking trail is another recent addition. The 0.6-mile trail is paved. Wooden foot-bridges add to the scenic experience. You'll enjoy basketball at MLK, volleyball at Library Park, and tennis at Big City. Plus, the "Bark Park" and its canine amenities is now open for your off-leash doggies.

Cornelia has many local attractions from year round car shows for the car enthusiast or the average person who finds beautiful old cars to be a work of art to annual festivals such as the Annual Big Red Apple Festival in the town square
is timed to coincide with the annual apple harvest. An iconic fixture in town is the giant 5,200-lb apple sculpture that sits on an obelisk high atop a hill. Chenocetah Tower, a stone tower built by the WPA back in 1936, was originally used as a fire tower. The historic train depot welcomes visitors Tues-Sat.
