History

Cleveland is the home of Truett-McConnell College. This 800-student, private liberal arts school operates under the auspices of the Georgia Baptist Convention. Truett-McConnell alum Xavier Roberts founded BabyLand General Hospital and created the Cabbage Patch Kids. Unicoi State Park, in the scenic  mountains above Helen, features streams with fast-moving rapids. There's also hiking and mountain bike trails and the Anna Ruby Falls, where stream cascades over rocks, creating smaller waterfalls. A half-mile paved trail up to the falls can be navigated by young and old alike.

There's also the Smithgall Woods-Dukes Creek Conservation Area, and Mount Yonah, where on any given day you can hike or watch the Army Rangers repelling down the face of the mountain. The nearby town of Helen attracts artistic types and architecture buffs because of its unique Bavarian-themed buildings and storefronts.

In addition to being known as the "Gateway to the Mountains," White County is the home of numerous vineyards and wineries, including the Yonah Mountain Vineyards. The soil in the area had been compared to that found in Italy's Piedmont region. Residents enjoy wine tastings and winery tours.
